Homework:

  • Guiding Reading Questions: What is the relationship between online personas and offline lives? How do we curate and craft our identities in digital spaces? In what ways are we being profiled as online users?
  • Read “How different are your online and offline personalities?” “Social Media’s Charts and Metrics” and “How to Become Instagram-Famous”
  • Blog 8: You should have installed at least two of the browser extensions about accessibility, terms of service, and online tracking identified in class. For the next few days, refer to these extensions during your regular browsing. Write about what you learn about online accessibility and privacy. Focus on at least two websites that you might use for WP 3 and write about how you understand them differently now that you have more information about the back-end infrastructure of the site. What does this teach you about the design of websites and of the Internet?

Tuesday, November 12: Digital Personas as Arguments

  • Read BR: “Chapter 10: Evaluating” and “Chapter 11: Proposing”
  • Read “New European rules” (evaluative argument) and “Nobody reads privacy policies” (proposal argument)

  • Begin working the first draft of WP 3
  • Blog 9: Find four perspectives on or recent news reports about your chosen digital space. Summarize the perspectives/news items and include links. Make sure to connect what others are discussing about your website to your developing analysis of the digital space. Does this research reinforce your understanding of the digital space? How does this research change your perspective?

Homework:

  • Complete revisions to WP 3 and submit by 11:59 pm on Wednesday, December 11
  • Blog 10 (due at finals period): Write about what you’ve learned in this unit about spatial arguments, the design of websites, and prevalence of tracking and profiling as well as the composing process and yourself as a writer/composer. Draw on readings and discussions from class and try to use direct quotes or specific examples. End by connecting what you’ve learned in this unit to the previous two units in this course.
